Department Features
Our department offers a unique combination of two majors - Urban Planning and Disaster Management, providing the professional training and knowledge needed to tackle countless challenges posed by climate change, economic globalization, urbanization and social transformations. We have a number of highly-qualified academics and practitioners working in public and private sectors, who are eager to share their knowledge and experience with you. Our teaching strategy is guided by three core principles:
Practice-led Teaching: We recognize the importance of developing practical skills applicable to the real world situations. Hence, we are focused on increasing the number of practice-led learning opportunities in our department. In addition to regular guest talks, our program also features local community engagement projects, interdisciplinary practicums and summer internships.
Technical Capability: Our department is equipped with advanced facilities. We introduce our students to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and teach them how to use different software tools used in the fields of disaster and rescue planning, disaster prevention and response system management, urban planning, and landscape architecture.
Local & International Activities: We care deeply about our community. We seek to develop a closer relationship with local communities to help them to overcome their economic, environmental and social difficulties. We also have a strong relationship with our partner universities abroad, and offer exciting student exchange programs in Japan, South Korea, and Mainland China.
Program Length and Degree Conferred
The length of our undergraduate and master’s degree programs is four and two years, respectively. However, we also offer an accelerated degree program, which allows our students to complete both degrees within five years. The duration of PhD is up to seven years.
Bachelor's Degree: A Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Urban Planning and Disaster Management
Master's Degree: A Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Urban Planning and Disaster Management
Professional Master's Degree: A Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Urban Planning and Disaster Management

Careers and Employment
Our graduates are in high demand in both public and private sectors.
Public Sector: The interdisciplinary nature of our courses and our long-lasting connections with government agencies and national research institutes provide our students with a wide range of employment opportunities at the different levels of government. A large number of our former students now work in various local and national government agencies including urban development bureaus, urban and rural development departments, public works divisions, the National Fire Agency, and the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR).
Private Sector: Many tutors in our department come from private sector. We also have a well-established summer internship program. In effect, our graduates are exposed to various employment opportunities with private companies, involved in real estate development and management, urban planning consultancy or urban regeneration.
